Pradaxa Use Leading to Death

Pradaxa Deaths Due to Serious Bleeding Events

Fighting for families struck by tragedy

Like all anticoagulants, taking Pradaxa carries a substantial risk and requires patients and doctors alike to take many precautions. But what has made Pradaxa the target of numerous lawsuits as well as continued scrutiny by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the prevalence of Pradaxa bleeding deaths following traumatic injury. For some Pradaxa patients, what would normally be a minor injury can turn fatal when doctors find themselves unable to stop internal bleeding. Many families of Pradaxa patients have experienced the tragedy of watching a loved one die from a seemingly minor injury. At the Phillips Law Offices, we are committed to fighting for families who have seen their lives turned upside down following Pradaxa deaths.

Pradaxa related deaths

The numerous Pradaxa side effects, including serious bleeding issues, are well documented. To some extent, this is an unavoidable facet of its effectiveness as an anticoagulant. What makes Pradaxa different, however, and what has contributed to numerous Pradaxa related deaths, is the inability of doctors to counter its effects in patients who have suffered a traumatic injury. This means that hospitals can be helpless to stop internal bleeding that, under normal circumstances, would be well within their ability to control.

As of October 2011, the drug’s manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim had reported 260 Pradaxa bleeding deaths worldwide. Soon thereafter, the first Pradaxa lawsuits began to appear in federal and state courts across the United States. While the FDA has continued to support the medical benefits of Pradaxa, it has been closely monitoring reports of bleeding events and other serious side effects in patients taking the drug.

With physicians becoming more educated regarding the unique bleeding risks associated with Pradaxa, the number of Pradaxa related deaths will hopefully decrease. But until there is a method in place for countering the anticoagulant effects of the drug following traumatic injuries in patients, the very real risk will continue to exist.
