What is Pradaxa?

Information for individuals and families harmed by this drug

When pharmaceutical products liability attorneys learn of a new and potentially dangerous drug on the market, it is important for them to arm themselves with thorough knowledge before entering the fray. Just because a drug has potential side effects does not necessarily mean it would legally be considered defective. What often matters most is whether a drug company, either negligently or intentionally, minimized or failed to disclose those side effects to the public. But our team at the Phillips Law Offices has litigated numerous drug liability cases, including cases involving Pradaxa. We understand the issues and use that knowledge to get results for our clients.

What is Pradaxa used for?

What is Pradaxa? Also known as dabigatran, Pradaxa is among a class of drugs called anticoagulants according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Anticoagulants are normally used to treat disorders of the circulatory system and include notably drugs such warfarin — known commonly by the trade name Coumadin. These drugs can be very useful but must also be closely monitored through regular blood tests because they can cause unusually severe bruising or bleeding. Anticoagulants can also interact with certain medications and even foods — such as broccoli — that contain natural anticoagulants or vitamin K.

What is Pradaxa used for? Specifically, it is used to decrease risk of stroke or blood clots in patients with irregular heartbeat — called atrial fibrillation or A Fib. Pradaxa has been marketed as a better alternative to traditional warfarin because, according to the manufacturer, it is more effective in reducing the risk of stroke, it does not need to be monitored with regular blood tests and does not carry dietary restrictions.

While warfarin has long been a widely used anticoagulant for patients at risk for stroke and other circulatory issues, the broad restrictions and close monitoring it required prompted many physicians to be very enthusiastic about the touted benefits of Pradaxa. But unfortunately, Pradaxa was not without its problems and many patients who switched to or started on Pradaxa experienced unexpected and serious Pradaxa side effects. These side effects vary widely in severity but may have been fatal in some cases. If you or someone you love has experienced serious side effects while on Pradaxa, call the Phillips Law Offices today to learn how we can help.
